Diabetes Mellitus (type 1), Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Anemia

bissugartest.jpg[Facts] 25 million people are suffering from diabetes mellitus. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for instance, 20% of the population is concerned.

[Symptoms] Symptoms of diabetes mellitus are: frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, extreme fatigue and irritability. Gastrointestinal symptoms or signs of anemia might be caused by a coeliac disease.

[Activation] Coeliac disease, more common in people with autoimmune diseases like diabetes mellitus (type 1), contributes to a weaker immune system and an aggravation of the diabetes.

[Prevention] As a gluten-free diet helps also with diabetic control, it has been suggested to screen all people with diabetes mellitus for coeliac disease. This is not done systematically yet.
