Anemia, Iron Absorption, and Coeliac Disease

bisanemicchild.jpg[Facts] In Nigeria, more than half of the children and 61% of the menstruating women are anemic because they have issues fixing iron. In the Philippines, 32% of the menstruating women are concerned.

[Symptoms] Headaches, chest pain, cognitive difficulties, lethargy, irregular or speedy heartbeat, coldness or numbness in feet and hands, shortness of breath, dizziness and pale skin.

[Activation] Allergy to gluten, especially coeliac disease, leads to an atrophy of the lining of the intestine which restricts the proper absorption of iron.

[Prevention] Recent research on anemia in menstruating women confirms that coeliac disease is under-investigated as a potential cause of anemia.
